What are the age and school requirements for entrants?
The Angelus Student Film Festival is open to college-level (graduate and undergraduate) students that have produced films, videos, documentaries and animation between June 2006 and July 2008 while the filmmaker attended a recognized educational or film school. Filmmakers will be expected to provide proof of school attendance before advancing.
Can I get my fee waived?
We recognize the difficulties and hardships that often face film students. Producing your film with all the unforeseen production costs can add up. We have worked hard to keep the entry fee at the reasonable $35-$45 rate while operating as a not-for-profit film festival. Please understand - if we could, we would. However, the small fee is necessary to help pay for festival costs.
My film won’t be ready by deadline, so can I send a rough cut now and supply you with a new version later?
We would need to know a little bit more about your schedule to answer this. However, due to the nature of the judging process, I’d recommend you do everything you can to get it in on time. Any more questions, please call us directly: 800-874-0999.
My film is not in the English language. Will you accept it?
All films must be subtitled in English or dubbed in English.
Does the Angelus Student Film Festival provide transportation and/or lodging to the event?
The Angelus Student Film Festival is pleased to offer one of the highest cash awards to winning student filmmakers- $10,000 grand prize. And we have progressively added other categories to honor more talented filmmakers. Because we have placed our priorities on cash awards, we are unable to offer any other stipends at this time.

What makes the Angelus Student Film Festival different than the other competitions? Why should I enter the Angelus Student Film Festival and not the others?
The answer lies in our mission statement. We aren’t looking for run-of-the mill Hollywood fare. We are looking for films that “respect the dignity of the human person.” Films that communicate values such as love, equality, dignity, hope, respect for human life, spirituality, triumph of the human spirit and diversity in the human community.

Do you have a separate documentary category?
Yes. The "Award for Outstanding Documentary" has a cash award of $3,000 plus industry gifts and certificates. The winner of this category is also eligible for the top prize – The Patrick Peyton Excellence in Filmmaking Award, $10,000.
Do you have a separate Animation category?
Yes. The “Outstanding Animation Award” has a cash award of $2,000 plus industry gifts and certificates. The winner of this category is also eligible for the top prize – The Patrick Peyton Excellence in Filmmaking Award, $10,000.
How long does it take to get the judging results?
We anticipate first round of judging to be completed by early August. We will notify you by email and snail mail. Please keep us current if you change addresses. The second round will be completed shortly after that. You can always call for an update.
Can I get my tape or DVD back?
Yes – but you have to include a self-addressed stamped envelope or package. The Angelus Student Film Festival is not responsible for any damages incurred during the shipping process, so please remember a hard case if you want extra protection.
Can multiple entries be submitted on one screener?
Our preference is that you submit one title per screener or DVD. This eliminates unnecessary confusion in the judging process. Each of your work(s) should stand on its own, in the best possible light. For instance, if you were submitting screenplays, you wouldn’t want two in the same binding. They are two separate and distinct pieces of art.
How many films may I submit?
As many as you want. However, a separate entry fee must be included for each entry.
Can I charge the entry fee?
Yes, you may charge your fee to Visa or MasterCard. However, in the event of a declined transaction, a $10 fee will be assessed.
If selected, what format do I need to have to screen my film?
The Angelus Student Film Festival are held each year at the Directors Guild in Hollywood. If you are a finalist or winner, the preferred formats for the DGA are Beta SP, 35mm, or DigiBeta.
How many films are submitted each year?
The numbers vary from year to year, but in a typically we receive well over 500 shorts a year, from over 100 film schools and over 20 countries.
Who are the Festival Jurors judges?
They vary from year to year. Basically, the judging is divided into categories. Industry experts from the fields of animation, documentary and live action are invited to judge within their specialty. We have a mix of producers, screenwriters, editors and filmmakers. In the past, we’ve had reps from Disney, Universal, DreamWorks, Film Roman, Cartoon Network … etc. Lee Batchler (co-writer, Batman Forever, Smoke and Mirrors) Exec Producer Phil Nemy ( Touchstone, Columbia, Walt Disney.) Documentarian Nancy Williams (Fox TV News, Discovery Channel.) Animator Barton Gawboy (Shrek, Prince of Egypt, Vertical Limit.) Producer Steve McVeety (The Passion, What Women Want, We Were Soldiers), Producer Douglas Urbanski (The Contender), Writer/Producer Duane Adler (Step Up, Save the Last Dance), Producer Paul Rosenberg (Go) to name a few.
Who are some of the past Angelus winners?
Past winners include:
- Greg Marcks – Florida State University (Angelus 2001 – Grand Prize) who wrote and directed 11:14, starring Hilary Swank.
- Sabrina Dhawan – Columbia University, NY (Angelus 2001 – Audience Impact Award) whose latest screenplay was made into the indie favorite, Monsoon Wedding (2002).
- Patricia Cardoso – UCLA (Angelus 1996 - Grand Prize) who won the 2002 Sundance Film Festival Special Jury Prize for Real Women Have Curves.
- Tony Bui – Loyola Marymount (Angelus 1996 - Production Design) who went on to write and direct Three Seasons and win Sundance, as well as Independent Spirit Awards.
- Barbara Shock – AFI (Angelus 1999 – Production Design) captured the Academy Award for Live Action Short for My Mother Dreams Satan’s Disciples.
- Ham Tran – UCLA (Angelus 2002 – Production Design Honorable Mention) went on to write and direct Journey From the Fall which premiered at Sundance 2005.
